QMED Welcomes Study Visit from Walailak University, Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR – The Quality Management and Enhancement Department (QMED), Universiti Malaya, was pleased to welcome a delegation from Walailak University (WU), Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, for a study visit focused on quality assurance in higher education.

Walailak University is preparing to submit selected programmes for assessment under the ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) framework in the 2026 fiscal year. As part of this preparation, WU identified Universiti Malaya as a benchmark institution, recognising UM’s strong and sustained record in AUN-QA — as Malaysia’s top-ranked university, an institution that has continuously developed and certified its programmes under AUN-QA criteria, and a central training hub for AUN-QA assessors in the ASEAN region.

During the visit, both institutions shared experiences and best practices in programme-level AUN-QA assessment preparation, internal quality assurance mechanisms, and institutional quality management. The QMED team also shared UM’s broader quality journey, including the development of the Universiti Malaya Quality Excellence Index (UMQEI), the first comprehensive index-based quality and excellence assessment implemented by a higher education institution in Malaysia.

The session concluded with an exchange of mementoes and a commitment to continued collaboration between the two institutions in advancing quality assurance across the ASEAN higher education community.
